Wonderful Island Country, Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka (formally Ceylon) is a beautiful island located on and surrounded by blue Indian ocean. This island country, Sri Lanka is located 880 kilometers (547 miles) north of the equator. Because of that it is a wonderful tropical country to visit. Height and width of Sri Lanka is 432 kilometers (268 miles) and 224 kilometers (139 miles). Total area of Sri Lanka island is 65,610 square kilometers (25,332 square miles)
The land of Sri Lanka is surrounded by the sea and centre of the country is full of mountains and give the birth to the major rivers of Sri Lanka. The nature of central highland is full with endemic flora and fauna, natural waterfalls, and it is named as UNESCO heritage because of that diversity. Estimated population of Sri Lanka is nearly 20 million. They have very different cultures, languages, religions and practises. Because of that this small island country, Sri Lanka have a very vast diversity of societies.
The name of the country, Sri Lanka is given later by the government. Earlier, this island called "Sinhale". Meaning is"The land of lion people". "Sinha" means "Lion" and "le" means "Land". They were fearless and very rich by ancient technologies. But this country faced to lots of attacks of invaders. After surrender by United Kingdom on 1818, they named this country as "Ceylon". Because they couldn't pronounce the real name of the country "Sinhale".
This wonderful island country, Sri Lanka faced to invaders from Portuguese, Dutch, and British. They used this wonderful land to get gems and grow commercial spice plants. For that they rehabilitated the rain forests of central highlands according to their farms. To deliver their harrvest, they developed the road system and introduced modern transport methods like, Railways.
